Privacy Policy

How Inside OAU! collects, uses, and protects information for students of Obafemi Awolowo University.

Last updated — October 2026

Draft. Written to reflect this app's actual features, but not a substitute for review by a qualified professional before public launch.

01Information We Collect

Account information you provide: your name, email address, matriculation number, department, level, password, and — if you add one — a phone number. Content you create: posts, comments, messages, marketplace listings, and profile details. Usage information: which posts you view, app interactions, and device/log data collected automatically. Contacts: if you grant permission and tap “Find friends,” phone numbers from your contacts are sent to our servers to check which of them already have an account — we do not store your contacts. Sign-in devices: a random identifier and general device type (for example, "an Android device") are stored for each device you sign in on, so we can alert you when your account is used on a new one. Class information: your department and level are used to place you in your class group chat and show you your class’s announcements and timetable. Push notifications: if enabled, a device token is stored so we can deliver notifications to that device.

02How We Use Your Information

We use your information to operate the app’s features — your social feed, marketplace, campus events and ticketing, CBT quizzes and duels, and messaging — and to keep the platform safe, including reviewing reports of abuse.

03Direct Messages Are End-to-End Encrypted

Text messages you send in one-on-one chats are encrypted on your device before they’re sent. We do not have the ability to read the content of these messages, on our servers or otherwise. To open chats quickly, your device keeps a copy of recent messages that is itself encrypted with a key held in your device’s secure storage. Photos, videos, voice notes, and group chats are not covered by this encryption.

04Third-Party Services

We use the following third parties to operate the app, each of which processes certain data as part of providing their service: Supabase (database and authentication), Cloudinary and Mux (image and video hosting), Paystack (payment processing for marketplace and event ticket purchases — we do not store your card details ourselves), Resend and Google (transactional emails — ticket confirmations, data exports, and password resets), Expo (delivering push notifications to your device), GitHub (hosting for shared study materials — see “Shared Study Materials” below), and Anthropic (the AI provider behind flashcard generation, tutoring, and summarization features).

05Shared Study Materials Are Public

Past papers and other study materials shared through the app are hosted on GitHub and served publicly over the internet — this is what keeps that feature free to run. Once a file is uploaded, treat it as permanent and public: removing it from the app hides it from the feed, but does not delete the underlying file, which may still be reachable by anyone with the link.

06Your Choices and Rights

From Settings → Your Account, you can download a copy of your data, deactivate your account (hides your profile and activity; signing back in reverses this), or permanently delete your account and everything tied to it. Deletion is immediate and cannot be undone. From Settings → Privacy & Safety, you can make your account private, control who can message you, hide your online status, and manage blocked accounts.

07Data Retention

We keep your information for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your data is removed immediately, except where we are required to retain records (for example, payment records) for legal or accounting purposes.

08Children’s Privacy

Inside OAU! is intended for university students and is not directed at children under 13.

09Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the app changes. We’ll update the “Last updated” date above when we do.
